Trace Adkins and Amy Smart flee tornadoes in the trailer and poster for the storm drama 13 Minutes. Adkins, a major country-western star, has been appearing in film and television for the last few decades, usually in smaller roles here and there, but leads this new storm thriller with a host of well-known back up players. Thora Birch, Amy Smart, Anne Heche, Peter Facinelli, and Paz Vega star alongside Adkins in the dramatic thriller directed by Lindsay Gossling. Adkins last film was the western Apache Junction with Thomas Jane and Stuart Townsend.
Amy Smart is best known for her comedy films, including Just Friends with Ryan Reynolds and the Crank movies with Jason Statham. Thora Birch is best-known for her role in Alan Ball’s American Beauty, as well as her part in the cult classic Hocus Pocus. Peter Facinelli has recently starred in S.W.A.T. and Supergirl, but is also known for his part as Dr. Carlisle Cullen in The Twilight Saga. Anne Heche has starred in a number of film and TV projects, including HBO’s Hung with Thomas Jane, Chicago P.D. and All Rise.
Now, the cast pulls together to escape a massive tornado storm in the trailer for 13 Minutes from Quiver Distribution, the title of which accounts for the time it takes to get to safety when a tornado makes landing. The film tracks four families as they attempt to make the time and avoid the storm’s path while their lives intersect in doing so. Director Gossling wrote the script with actual storm chaser Travis Farcombe in order to get the accuracy of a tornado touchdown and the aftermath on film. Check out the trailer below:
Disaster films have been a popular genre in Hollywood for a long time, making up a large stable of genre hits throughout the years. The most well-known modern day tornado thriller is Jan De Bont’s Twister, which starred the late Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt. Since then, there have been other contenders such as Dante’s Peak with Pierce Brosnan, The Perfect Storm with George Clooney, and, most recently, Greenland with Gerard Butler. While the disasters in question have varied from storms to natural disasters, the desire to tell these types of stories haven’t waned.
The draw to stories about natural disasters is perhaps one of the most human ones. Feature films about disasters are a ripe platform to explore the drama involved in surviving and coping with such phenomenons and Hollywood has been quick to capitalize on it. From The Towering Inferno to Titanic and beyond, the genre is wide open for exploration, be it a true-life tale or a fictional one. With 13 Minutes, it falls to the latter, but should be no less harrowing given the detail and cast invested in it. 13 Minutes will open in theaters October 29 and hits VOD on November 19.
